Why not write about it?I stuck a wiki and a journal together because I'm complicated like that. The journal is for passing thoughts and observations, the wiki is for more sketched out ideas. Sometimes you'll see a link to a wiki page that hasn't been written yet. Don't worry, it will be at some point. |
I built this sofa last year (2005): ![]() Previously I had been using a futon on a frame, but it was constantly sagging and sitting on it just made me slump and feel lazy. Plus it was ugly. The idea behind the sofa was to create a cozy space on one side of a large-ish living room and to be a sort of a sit-up-straight kind of sofa. I just thought it would suit my personality a bit better. The L-shape partitions off that side of the room, and the three corners make for a nice supported/embraced feeling when you nestle in. It's not perfect. The straight back is a little *too* straight, and I initially underestimated the amount of padding needed to be comfortable. But I like it. The wood from the futon frame was used for the table behind the sofa and for this: ![]() And some of the futon padding was used for the cushions. The entire sofa is made out of common 2x4 lumber and some panels, no finish. It's very strong, and the notion was that it could be easily taken apart/modified with a minimum of fuss, and at the end of its life the 2x4's would still be useful for other things. Plus FSC certified 2x4 lumber is easy to get these days at home centers like Home Depot. One rule I have for furniture, whether I make it or buy it is that I have to be able to move it myself, taking it apart if need be. I'm just weird like that. |
